21st March 2016
Ahead of Martin Smolinski’s return to the UK this week for the special NSSC meeting, here are a few words from the man himself…
“This week I will be making a short visit back to England to catch up with fans and friends.
On Wednesday evening, 23rd March, I will visit my friends at NSSC, Nuneaton Speedway Supporters Club at their base in Brandon village, close to the Coventry Speedway Stadium, for the first UK showing of my feature film, “SPEED, MUD & GLORY”. This is due to be shown, projected on to the large screen, thanks to the help of well known International Speedway referee and FIM delegate, Tony Steele, who is also due to be at the meeting.
This film was recently featured in Speedway Star magazine, as well as having a cinema release in Germany and being shown at a film festival in New York . It follows the life of current speedway riders, with interviews from Greg Hancock, Chris Holder and the late Lee Richardson. It also shows the history of the sport, with previously unseen archive footage, featuring riders like Egon Muller.
The meeting is due to start at 7:30, with a short introduction before the film. This will be followed by a Q and A session, in the traditional format at NSSC, where I will talk about my plans for the coming year, including the recent news that I will partner Nicki Pedersen in the new format Best Pairs on Eurosport and there will be lots to say about the sport in general, as it’s the first time I have visited the club since I left the UK before entering the SGP series.
Further details and location of this showing can be found on the website
www.nuneatonspeedwaysupportersclub.co.uk. A short trailor of the film can be seen here. The film has now been released on DVD and I will be bringing some copies with me for sale.
Earlier in the day, thanks to the kind invitation of Graham Drury at Birmingham Speedway, I will be doing a few laps during the “Brummies’ press and practice at Perry Barr. After the presentation of the current Birmingham team, on track action is scheduled to start at 13:00. A special thank you to Rob Painter at Revolution Pro Race Speedway Team, for supplying me with the equipment to do this, providing an excellent opportunity to secure both valuable track time and further develop the Jawa engines on a familiar circuit. Hopefully some of you will be able to make it down to Perry Barr and I look forward to meeting fans and old friends, from my days of racing there.
Unfortunately I was not able to compete at Bomber’s Big Bang Testimonial, due to clashing commitments, as I run a three day training school for young German riders in Italy at Lonigo. I thank him for my invitation and send him my best wishes for a successful and hopefully rain free day. As this sadly could be the last year for Coventry racing at the Brandon Stadium, while in the UK, I also plan to attend the meeting on Friday 25th March against Leicester, to allow me to meet up with friends and colleagues, at a track where I had a very successful and happy few years.
I hope to see you all in the next few days and look forward to seeing a big
crowd at the film show. Bring your own popcorn!”
The NSSC event is on Wednesday 23rd March, starting at 7.30pm. The venue address is: Brandon Club, Main Street, Brandon, Coventry, CV8 3HW.
