Report

The 2017 British Youth Championship concluded at Leicester on Sunday for both the 500cc and 250cc classes, with just 125cc British Final to be completed once a venue has been confirmed.

There were 6 entries in both classes, and as per normal some fantastic racing was witnessed by a decent size crowd of both Leicester and Coventry supporters who stayed to watch the stars of tomorrow after their challenge fixture at the East Midlands venue.

The 2 newly crowned British Champions Drew Kemp (500cc) and Leon Flint (250cc) were both competing although after Flint had clinched the 250cc British Title in the previous round, he now stepped up to the 500cc class.

Any concerns that Flint could compete at a higher level were quickly dispersed as he not only competed in his heats, he won all 4 qualifying heats, and already looked like an early contender for next years 500cc British Title.

As well as Flint winning 4 of the 6 qualifying heats, Kemp won the other 2 heats with 500cc Runner up Daniel Gilkes getting 4 2nd places to set up an epic final.

James Laker with a respectable 5 point score also qualified for the final.

With the 250cc title already decided and also Jason Edwards had already claimed enough points to guarantee 2nd place, all eyes were on who would claim the overall 3rd place finish with only 7 points separating 4 riders.

Nathan Ablitt was on 77 points , Dan Thompson and Jordan Palin were on 74, and Joe Thompson on 70, so all to play for.

With both Flint and Edwards (due to an injury) not competing in this 250cc class it really did set this class up nicely , and ironically it was those 4 riders who were chasing a 3rd place finish who all qualified for the final, so almost 1 race would define the series result for an overall 3rd place finish.

Both Ablitt and Dan Thompson had 3 wins apiece in the heats, Joe had 4 second places and Palin scraped through with a 5 point score.

Dan kept his nerve in the final and raced off to win both the Leicester round and more importantly his brother Joe and Palin kept Ablitt relegated back in 4th position which meant that Dan claimed 3rd overall.

So all in all another fantastic series, with just the 125cc British now to compete.
